About Scully

Paul Sculthorpe

Paul ‘Scully’ Sculthorpe was born to play Rugby League! ...and is regarded as one of the true greats of the modern game.

Touted as a future Great Britain captain before he’d even played a professional game, Scully started on his journey to the top in 1991 signing for Warrington RLFC as a fourteen year old schoolboy from his junior club Waterhead ARLFC in Oldham. Reaching his early potential he made his Great Britain debut as an eighteen year old on the 1996 Oceania Tour to PNG, Fiji and New Zealand.

In 1998 Scully signed for St Helens RLFC in a world record transfer for a forward for £375,000 aged nineteen. This was to be a move that paid great dividends to both Paul and Saints as they went on to be the most successful team in the Super League era, claiming five Challenge Cup titles, four Super League titles and two World Club Challenge titles between 1998 and 2008. During this time Scully was twice named Man of Steel (2001, 2002), still the only player ever to retain the award in consecutive years.

In 2004 Scully was named Saints skipper and in 2005 as many predicted, he was named Great Britain captain. In 2008 after two years of a horrendous run of injuries, Scully decided to hang up his boots and look towards the next chapter of his life. In 2009 he set up Paul Sculthorpe Rugby League Skills & Development in an aim to get more people involved in the great game of Rugby League. Scully aims to pass on his vast knowledge and experience, not only to those hoping also to make it to the big time but to those who just want to try the Rugby League experience for the first time. Scully himself has a very much hands on approach to his skills & development programme, the aim not only to get more participants playing the game but to encourage youngsters to lead a healthy lifestyle through sport.

Who knows maybe he may unearth a future GB captain too..!!!!
